After the revolution, women were mostly prohibited from going to football games, but these restrictions have since somewhat relaxed. For the first time in more than 40 years, women were permitted to witness a championship match in August 2022.
Repercussions for a male football player's interactions with a female fan have happened before. Esteghlal goalie Hossein Hosseini hugged a female fan during a championship game in April, earning him a fine of almost $4,700 and a one-match suspension. "Bad behaviour towards security agents at the game" was another reason given by the federation at the time for its decision.
