The Federal University of Agriculture Abeokuta (FUNAAB) was yesterday
shut down by the management following a violent protest by the students.
According to report, the students were protesting the incessant cases of
robbery occasioned by the poor security situation in the school.
It was learnt that a recent case of robbery in one of the hostels led to
the death of one of the students which angered the students to the
point of taking to the streets.
The situation later degenerated to a violent protest when the police
started firing tear gas canisters at the students. It was learnt that a
police post at Osiele was burnt, while a church around the school which
was said to have been founded by the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Olusola
Oyewole was also vandalized. Cars of staff members of the schools within
the reach of the angry students were not left out.
The policemen however were able to curtail the situation and about 34
students have been arrested in
connection with the protest.
In a statement released by the Head, Directorate of Public Relations in
the institution, Mrs Emi Alawode, it was revealed that the Management of
the institution has declared a 7-day mid-semester break with effect
