All Humanities Ph.D Programmes
require a minimum CGPA of 3.5 on a 5 point scale except English
Studies and History & Diplomatic Studies which requires a minimum CGPA of
4.0 on a 5 point scale. In addition candidates must score a minimum of 60% in
the admission interview to be found admissible.

Requirements for MA Comparative
Literature Programme:
Candidates shall possess at least a
Second Class Honours Degree with a CGPA of not less than 3.0 points on a 5
point scale or its equivalent in Literature from a recognized University.
Graduates in English have to produce evidence of a minimum of two years (four
semesters) academic exposure to French or another language of International
communication.
African Language
There is a Special African Language
requirement for the Comparative Literature Programme. Any candidate who is
deficient in speaking, reading or writing an African language will be required
to take an appropriate course in the Department of Linguistics and
Communication Studies and produce evidence of having passed that course.
Requirements for Ph.D Comparative
Literature Programme:
Candidates must have an M.A. Degree
in Literature or M.A. Degree in other related discipline in addition to the
other Faculty Requirements.

Qualifications for Admission
To be eligible for admission into
Postgraduate Diploma Programme in History and Diplomacy, a candidate must have
a good honours Degree not less than third class and a CGPA of not less than
1.50 and above in the Humanities, Social Sciences, Education, Law and the
Management Sciences.

Qualifications for
Admission into the Masters Programme
To qualify for admission into the
M.A Degree Programmes of the Department, candidates must possess at least a
Second Class Honours Degree with a CGPA of not less than 3.00 on a 5 point
scale or its equivalent of the University of Port Harcourt or from any other
recognized University in the relevant subjects.
Except for Archaeology/Cultural
Heritage Management, candidates from non-History backgrounds will be required
to pass through the Department’s Postgraduate Diploma Programme in History and
Diplomacy before admission into the MA programmes.
(iii) Doctor of Philosophy
(Ph.D) programme
Qualifications for Admission
To be eligible for admission into the Doctor of
Philosophy programme in History and Diplomatic studies, a candidate must have an
MA/M.Sc Degree with a CGPA of 4.00 and above on a 5- point scale in History
from any Nigerian University or abroad. Except for Archaeology,
candidates from non-History
backgrounds are expected to pass through the Department’s Postgraduate Diploma
Programme in History and Diplomatic Studies to be admitted into Ph.D Degree
programmes. In addition, candidates will be required to present a written
proposal on a thesis topic in their chosen field, and score a minimum of 60% in
pre-admission oral interview.

To be eligible for admission into
the programme, a candidate must have a good honours Degree in any field from
any recognized University. Candidates with HND Upper Credit are also
eligible for admission into the PGD Programme. Candidates with pass
Degree will not be admitted.
Requirements for M.A. Linguistics
& Communication Studies:
Candidates wishing to enroll in the
Communication component must hold at least a Second Class Honours Degree with a
CGPA of not less than 3.00 on a 5 point scale or a Lower Credit with a CGPA of
3.50 on a 5 point scale in Postgraduate Diploma in Mass Communication,
Communication Studies/Arts.
Candidates wishing to enroll in the Linguistics component must possess the same
qualifications in Linguistics or a subject with a strong linguistic component.
Requirements for Ph.D Linguistics
& Communication Studies
Candidates wishing to enroll in the
Communication component must hold at least a Masters Degree with a CGPA of at
least 3.50 on a 5 point scale in Mass Communication, Communication
Studies/Arts. Candidates wishing to enroll in the Linguistics component
must possess the same qualifications in Linguistics or a subject with a strong
linguistic component.

University of Port Harcourt or any other approved University who have obtained
approved Bachelor’s Degree in Adult Education with at least 3.00 CGPA on a 5
point scale or its equivalent.
(ii) Candidates who did not major in
Adult Education but obtained at least 2nd
Class Honours Degree or above and
with a minimum CGPA of 3.50 in the
Postgraduate Diploma in Education.
Such candidates would be required to do some remedial courses as prescribed in
the handbook.

HUMAN KINETICS AND HEALTH EDUCATION

Bachelor’s Degree in Human Kinetics or Human Kinetics and Health Education
(Integrated Major). Preferably holders of Second Class Honours Degree from a
recognized University with at least a CGPA of 3.00 on a 5-point scale or its
equivalent.
(ii) Candidates with a
Bachelor’s Degree in Science or Science Education after having obtained the
Nigerian Certificate in Education (NCE) in Human Kinetics or Human Kinetics and
Health Education (this category of candidates may be required to take some
additional courses in Human Kinetics and related courses as may be prescribed
by the Department).
(iii) An Upper Credit in
Postgraduate Diploma in Education (PGDE).
C. M.Sc (Ed)
Health Education

Requirements
(i) Candidates must
possess Second Class Honours Degree with a minimum CGPA of 3.00 on a 5 point
scale or its equivalent from a recognized University in Health Education or
Health and Human Kinetics (Integrated Major)
(ii) A Degree in
Medicine or appropriate Medical Sciences in Nursing or
Advanced Graduate Diploma in Health
Education (AGDHE), Pharmacy, Dentistry and other Health and Environmental
related disciplines.
(iii) Candidates with a
Second Class Honours Degree with a minimum CGPA of 3.00 in related discipline
after having obtained the Nigerian Certificate in Education (NCE) in Health
Education or Human Kinetics and Health Education (Integrated Major). Such
candidates may be required to take additional courses in Human Kinetics and
Health Education as may be prescribed by the Department.
D. Ph.D in the following

The
programme consists of four areas, namely:
(a) Studies in the Theory and Practice of Education
(b) Specialized Procedure in the Teaching of Subjects

Candidates
must possess any of the following Degrees;

BSc, BA, B.Eng, MSc, M.A, MBA, Ph.D (without any Teaching Certificate) and
their equivalent from a recognized University.(1st Degree with a
minimum of 3rd class)

HND Upper Credit and its equivalent from recognized Polytechnics.
(ii) Duration

Full-Time: The Programme will last for a minimum of 12 calendar months and
maximum of 24 calendar months.
C. FACULTY OF SOCIAL SCIENCES
All Social Sciences Ph.D Programmes
require a minimum CGPA of 3.5 on a 5-point scale except Economics
and Sociology (Demography and Population Studies) which requires a minimum CGPA
of 4.0 on a 5 point scale.

scientific management and policy-oriented establishments will be an added
advantage..
Requirements for M.Sc in
Watershed and Wetlands Management:
Admission to the M.Sc Degree
programme in Watershed and Wetlands Management is open to graduates of this
University and other approved universities recognized by Senate. They must
either hold the Postgraduate Diploma in Geography and Environmental Management
with a CGPA of 3.5 and above or a Bachelors Degree in Geography, Civil, Water
and Environmental Engineering, Geological Sciences, Environmental Resource
Management, Agriculture and Forestry or Environmental Science with a minimum of
second class honours and minimum CGPA of 3.0 on a 5.0 point scale. Work
experience in scientific, management and other related establishments will be
an added advantage.
Requirements for
Ph.D in Environmental Management:
Admission to the Ph.D Degree
programme is open to graduates of this University who have attained a specific
level of performance in the M.Sc programme in GIS, Geography and Environmental
Management and related disciplines of the University of Port Harcourt or any
other recognized University with at least a CGPA of 3.50 in a five-point scale.
Requirements for Ph.D in
Disaster Risk Management:
Admission to the Ph.D Degree
programme in Disaster Risk Management is open to graduates of this University
who have attained a specific level of performance in the M.Sc programme in
Disaster Risk Management, Geography and Environmental Management and related
disciplines of the University of Port Harcourt or any other recognized
University with at least a CGPA of 3.50 in a five-point scale.

Programme in Public Administration (MPA)
Requirements for Executive Master’s
Degree Programme in PA.
A candidate for the MPA Programme is
expected to be a graduate of the University of Port Harcourt or any other
approved University with at least a Second Class Honours Lower Division, with a
CGPA of not less than 3.0 on a 5-point scale or 4.20 on a 7- point scale.
However, candidates with Third Class Degree may be considered provided
they have relevant employment experience for five (5) years.
DURATION
The Programme is designed to last
for twelve calendar months (12), consisting of two semesters and field
research/report writing and presentation period.

D. FACULTY OF
SCIENCE
All Science Ph.D Programmes require
a minimum CGPA of 4.0 on a 5 point scale and thesis score not lower than 60%

Plant Science and Biotechnology:

Bachelors’ Degree in Botany/Plant Science, or any good Honours Degree in
Microbiology, Agriculture, Crop Science, Biochemistry, Genetics, Biotechnology
or related field (depending on the option of the PGD) from the University of
Port Harcourt or any other recognized University within or outside Nigeria.
Potential Candidates with HND in relevant fields deemed suitable by the
Department of Plant Science and Biotechnology’s Graduate Board of Studies would
be considered for the requisite programmes.
