SCHOOL OF GRADUATE STUDIES
Applications are invited from suitably qualified candidates for admission into the following Programmes:
 A.  FACULTY OF HUMANITIES
All Humanities Ph.D Programmes require a minimum CGPA of 3.5 on a 5 point scale except English Studies and History & Diplomatic Studies which requires a minimum CGPA of 4.0 on a 5 point scale. In addition candidates must score a minimum of 60% in the admission interview to be found admissible.
 1.  COMPARATIVE LITERATURE PROGRAMME
M.A. Comparative Literature
Ph.D Comparative Literature
Requirements for MA Comparative Literature Programme:
Candidates shall possess at least a Second Class Honours Degree with a CGPA of not less than 3.0 points on a 5 point scale or its equivalent in Literature from a recognized University. Graduates in English have to produce evidence of a minimum of two years (four semesters) academic exposure to French or another language of International communication.
African Language
There is a Special African Language requirement for the Comparative Literature Programme. Any candidate who is deficient in speaking, reading or writing an African language will be required to take an appropriate course in the Department of Linguistics and Communication Studies and produce evidence of having passed that course.
Requirements for Ph.D Comparative Literature Programme:
Candidates must have an M.A. Degree in Literature or M.A. Degree in other related discipline in addition to the other Faculty Requirements.
 2.  DEPARTMENT OF THEATRE AND FILM STUDIES
Postgraduate Diploma (PGD), Master of Arts (MA) and Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D)
 (i)  Postgraduate Diploma (PGD) in Theartre & Media Arts

Admission Requirements for PGD Programme in Theartre & Media Arts
To qualify for admission into the Postgraduate Diploma programme, acandidate must obtain a first Degree in the disciplines within the Humanities or a first Degree from any other discipline.
(ii) Master of Arts (MA), Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D) in the following areas:
(a)    Dramatic Theory and Criticism
(b)    Sociology of Drama
(c)    Film Studies
(d)    Theatre and Cultural Administration

Requirements for M.A. Theatre Arts
Candidates must possess at least a Second Class Honours Degree in Theatre Arts with a CGPA of not less than 3.00 on a 5 point scale or its equivalent in Theatre Arts from a recognized University.
Requirements for Ph.D Theatre Arts
Candidates must have an M.A. Degree in Theatre Arts in addition to the other Faculty Requirements.
 3.  DEPARTMENT OF ENGLISH STUDIES
(a)    M.A., Ph.D in Literature with emphasis on:

  Requirements for M.A. English Studies
Candidates must possess at least a Second Class Honours Degree with a CGPA of not less than 3.00 on a 5 point scale or its equivalent in English Studies from a recognized University.
Requirements for Ph.D English Studies
Candidates must have an M.A. Degree in English Studies or related discipline in addition to the other Faculty Requirements.
4.  DEPARTMENT OF FOREIGN LANGUAGES AND LITERATURES
(i)     Postgraduate Diploma in French (PGDF)

Requirements for M.A. Foreign Languages and Literatures

Candidates must possess at least a Second Class Honours Degree with a CGPA of not less than 3.00 on a 5 point scale or its equivalent in Foreign Languages and Literatures from a recognized University or PGD Upper Credit.

Requirements for Ph.D Foreign Languages and Literatures
Candidates must have an M.A. Degree in Foreign Languages and Literatures in addition to the other Faculty Requirements.
5.  DEPARTMENT OF HISTORY AND DIPLOMATIC STUDIES
(i)  Postgraduate Diploma in History & Diplomatic Studies (PGDHDS)
Qualifications for Admission
To be eligible for admission into Postgraduate Diploma Programme in History and Diplomacy, a candidate must have a good honours Degree not less than third class and a CGPA of not less than 1.50 and above in the Humanities, Social Sciences, Education, Law and the Management Sciences.
(ii)  Master of Arts (M.A.) and Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D) in the following areas:
(a)   Social & Political History
(b)   Economic History
(c)   Diplomatic & International Studies
 Qualifications for Admission into the Masters Programme
To qualify for admission into the M.A Degree Programmes of the Department, candidates must possess at least a Second Class Honours Degree with a CGPA of not less than 3.00 on a 5 point scale or its equivalent of the University of Port Harcourt or from any other recognized University in the relevant subjects.
Except for Archaeology/Cultural Heritage Management, candidates from non-History backgrounds will be required to pass through the Department’s Postgraduate Diploma Programme in History and Diplomacy before admission into the MA programmes.
(iii)  Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D) programme
Qualifications for Admission
To be eligible for admission into the Doctor of Philosophy programme in History and Diplomatic studies, a candidate must have an MA/M.Sc Degree with a CGPA of 4.00 and above on a 5- point scale in History from any Nigerian University or abroad. Except for Archaeology,
candidates from non-History backgrounds are expected to pass through the Department’s Postgraduate Diploma Programme in History and Diplomatic Studies to be admitted into Ph.D Degree programmes. In addition, candidates will be required to present a written proposal on a thesis topic in their chosen field, and score a minimum of 60% in pre-admission oral interview.
6.  DEPARTMENT OF LINGUISTICS AND COMMUNICATION STUDIES
(i)     Postgraduate Diploma in Communication Studies (PGDCS)
(ii)   (a)  M.A., Ph.D in Linguistics in the following areas:

Requirements for Postgraduate Diploma in Communication Studies:
To be eligible for admission into the programme, a candidate must have a good honours Degree in any field from any recognized University.  Candidates with HND Upper Credit are also eligible for admission into the PGD Programme.  Candidates with pass Degree will not be admitted.
Requirements for M.A. Linguistics & Communication Studies:
Candidates wishing to enroll in the Communication component must hold at least a Second Class Honours Degree with a CGPA of not less than 3.00 on a 5 point scale or a Lower Credit with a CGPA of 3.50 on a 5 point scale in Postgraduate Diploma in Mass Communication,
Communication Studies/Arts.  Candidates wishing to enroll in the Linguistics component must possess the same qualifications in Linguistics or a subject with a strong linguistic component.
Requirements for Ph.D Linguistics & Communication Studies
Candidates wishing to enroll in the Communication component must hold at least a Masters Degree with a CGPA of at least 3.50 on a 5 point scale in Mass Communication, Communication Studies/Arts.  Candidates wishing to enroll in the Linguistics component must possess the same qualifications in Linguistics or a subject with a strong linguistic component.
 7. DEPARTMENT OF PHILOSOPHY
        M.A., Ph.D in Philosophy in the following areas:

Requirements for M.A. Philosophy
Candidates must have a minimum of a Bachelor’s Degree with a CGPA of 3.00 on a 5 point scale or its equivalent in Philosophy (single honours) or combined honours Degree with Philosophy as a component.
Requirements for Ph.D Philosophy
Candidates must have a Master’s Degree in Philosophy or its equivalent in addition to the other Faculty Requirements.
 8.  DEPARTMENT OF RELIGIOUS AND CULTURAL STUDIES
i.  Postgraduate Diploma (PGD) in Religious & Cultural Studies

Requirements for PGD in Religious and Cultural Studies:
Candidates must possess good honours Degree in the Humanities, Social Sciences, Education, Law, Management Sciences, and Science from the University of Port Harcourt or any other institution recognized by the Senate of the University of Port Harcourt.
Requirements for MA in Religious and Cultural Studies:
Admission to the MA programme will be open to candidates with the B.A. Degree in Religious and Cultural Studies, Islamic Studies, Theology or other related disciplines such as Philosophy, History, Sociology and Anthropology on a CGPA of 3.0 points on a 5-point scale, from the University of Port Harcourt or any other institution recognized by the Senate of the University of Port Harcourt
 Requirements for Ph.D Religious and Cultural Studies:
Candidates must have an M.A. Degree in Religious and Cultural Studies in addition to the other faculty Requirements.

Admission Requirements
All candidates must have passed their O’Level subjects with at least five credit passes including English Language.
 B.  FACULTY OF EDUCATION (REGULAR AND SANDWICH)
M.Ed and Ph.D Regular Programmes on Full-Time and Part-Time basis; M.Ed Sandwich (Long Vacation) programme. All Education Ph.D Programmes require a minimum CGPA of 4.0 on a 5 point scale. All Ph.D candidates are expected to attend a pre-admission oral interview, at which they are required to defend their written proposals. All Masters candidates must have a minimum CGPA of 3.00 on a 5-point scale.

Requirements for M.Ed Programme
The following categories of candidates may be admitted on application into the Programme:
(i)  Graduates of the University of Port Harcourt or any other approved University who have obtained approved Bachelor’s Degree in Adult Education with at least 3.00 CGPA on a 5 point scale or its equivalent.     
(ii) Candidates who did not major in Adult Education but obtained at least 2nd
Class Honours Degree or above and with a minimum CGPA of 3.50 in the
Postgraduate Diploma in Education. Such candidates would be required to do some remedial courses as prescribed in the handbook.
 15.  DEPARTMENT OF HUMAN KINETICS AND HEALTH EDUCATION
Both the Regular (Ph.D & M.Ed) and Sandwich (Long Vacation) M.Ed Programmes have the following areas:
(A)  M.Sc (Ed) Human Kinetics
       Areas of Specialization
        (a)   Physiology of Exercise
        (b)   Sports Administration and Marketing
        (c)   Sport Psychology
        (d)   Sociology of Sport
        (e)   Rehabilitation Therapy            
        Requirements
(i)  Candidates must possess a Bachelor’s Degree in Human Kinetics or Human Kinetics and Health Education (Integrated Major). Preferably holders of Second Class Honours Degree from a recognized University with at least a CGPA of 3.00 on a 5-point scale or its equivalent.
(ii)   Candidates with a Bachelor’s Degree in Science or Science Education after having obtained the Nigerian Certificate in Education (NCE) in Human Kinetics or Human Kinetics and Health Education (this category of candidates may be required to take some additional courses in Human Kinetics and related courses as may be prescribed by the Department).  
(iii)  An Upper Credit in Postgraduate Diploma in Education (PGDE).
C.    M.Sc (Ed) Health Education
        Areas of Specialization
         (a)   Community Health Education
         (b)   Occupational Health and Safety Education
         (c)   Environmental Health and Safety Education
Requirements
(i)   Candidates must possess Second Class Honours Degree with a minimum CGPA of 3.00 on a 5 point scale or its equivalent from a recognized University in Health Education or Health and Human Kinetics (Integrated Major) 
(ii)   A Degree in Medicine or appropriate Medical Sciences in Nursing or       Advanced  Graduate Diploma in Health Education (AGDHE), Pharmacy, Dentistry and other Health and Environmental related disciplines.
(iii)   Candidates with a Second Class Honours Degree with a minimum CGPA of 3.00 in related discipline after having obtained the Nigerian Certificate in Education (NCE) in Health Education or Human Kinetics and Health Education (Integrated Major). Such candidates may be required to take additional courses in Human Kinetics and Health Education as may be prescribed by the Department.
D.   Ph.D in the following areas:
       (i)   Sports Management
       (ii)  Psychology and Sociology of Sports
       (iii) Sports Marketing
       (iv) Community Health Education
       (v)   Environmental Health and Safety Education
       (vi)  Occupational Health and Safety Education
 Requirement
Candidates must possess either an M.Ed Degree in Human Kinetics and Health Education or other relevant Discipline in addition to the other Faculty Requirements.
 16.  INSTITUTE OF EDUCATION
Postgraduate Diploma in Education (PGDE) Regular and sandwich (Long Vacation) programme.
      The programme consists of four areas, namely:
      (a)    Studies in the Theory and Practice of Education
      (b)    Specialized Procedure in the Teaching of Subjects
      (c)    Supervised Practice in Teaching
      (d)    Supervised Project
(i)  Requirements -   
Candidates must possess any of the following Degrees;
(a) BSc, BA, B.Eng, MSc, M.A, MBA, Ph.D (without any Teaching Certificate) and their equivalent from a recognized University.(1st Degree with a minimum of 3rd class)
(b) HND Upper Credit and its equivalent from recognized Polytechnics.
(ii) Duration
(a)  Full-Time: The Programme will last for a minimum of 12 calendar months and maximum of 24 calendar months. 
C.  FACULTY OF SOCIAL SCIENCES
All Social Sciences Ph.D Programmes require a minimum CGPA of 3.5 on a 5-point scale except Economics and Sociology (Demography and Population Studies) which requires a minimum CGPA of 4.0 on a 5 point scale.
17.  DEPARTMENT OF ECONOMICS

 Requirements for  M.Sc in Geographic Information System (GIS):
Admission to the M.Sc Degree programme in GIS is open to graduates of this University and other approved universities recognized by Senate with a minimum of second class Bachelor’s in
Engineering etc. Work experience in scientific management and policy-oriented establishments will be an added advantage..
Requirements for  M.Sc in Watershed and Wetlands Management:
Admission to the M.Sc Degree programme in Watershed and Wetlands Management is open to graduates of this University and other approved universities recognized by Senate. They must either hold the Postgraduate Diploma in Geography and Environmental Management with a CGPA of 3.5 and above or a Bachelors Degree in Geography, Civil, Water and Environmental Engineering, Geological Sciences, Environmental Resource Management, Agriculture and Forestry or Environmental Science with a minimum of second class honours and minimum CGPA of 3.0 on a 5.0 point scale. Work experience in scientific, management and other related establishments will be an added advantage.
 Requirements for  Ph.D in Environmental Management:
Admission to the Ph.D Degree programme is open to graduates of this University who have attained a specific level of performance in the M.Sc programme in GIS, Geography and Environmental Management and related disciplines of the University of Port Harcourt or any other recognized University with at least a CGPA of 3.50 in a five-point scale.
Requirements for  Ph.D in Disaster Risk Management:
Admission to the Ph.D Degree programme in Disaster Risk Management is open to graduates of this University who have attained a specific level of performance in the M.Sc programme in Disaster Risk Management, Geography and Environmental Management and related disciplines of the University of Port Harcourt or any other recognized University with at least a CGPA of 3.50 in a five-point scale.
19.  DEPARTMENT OF SOCIOLOGY
(i)   Post Graduate Diploma in Sociology (PGDS). To be eligible to apply for
the PGDS, Candidates must possess at least a Third Class in Sociology or a minimum of Second Class Honours lower Division in related disciplines                in the Social Sciences and Humanities.
(ii)  M.Sc, Ph.D in Sociology in the following areas:
(a)  Industrial Relations & Personnel Management
(b) Criminology, Police Science & Social Work

20.  DEPARTMENT OF POLITICAL AND ADMINISTRATIVE

Requirements for Ph.D Political and Administrative Studies:
Candidates must have an M.Sc Degree in Political and Administrative Studies in addition to the other Faculty Requirements.
 21.   CLAUDE AKE SCHOOL OF GOVERNMENT
(i) Executive Master’s Degree Programme in Public Administration (MPA)
Requirements for Executive Master’s Degree Programme in PA.
A candidate for the MPA Programme is expected to be a graduate of the University of Port Harcourt or any other approved University with at least a Second Class Honours Lower Division, with a CGPA of not less than 3.0 on a 5-point scale or 4.20 on a 7- point scale.  However, candidates with Third Class  Degree may be considered provided they have relevant employment experience for five (5) years.
 DURATION
The Programme is designed to last for twelve calendar months (12), consisting of two semesters and field research/report writing and presentation period.

 D. FACULTY OF SCIENCE
All Science Ph.D Programmes require a minimum CGPA of 4.0 on a 5 point scale and thesis score not lower than 60% (B). All Ph.D candidates are expected to attend a pre-admission oral interview, at which they are REQUIRED to defend their written proposals.
 22.  DEPARTMENT OF BIOCHEMISTRY
(i)    Postgraduate Diploma in Biochemistry (PGDB)

23  DEPARTMENT OF PURE AND INDUSTRIAL CHEMISTRY
Postgraduate Diploma (PGD), Master of Science (M.Sc) and Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D)
General Entry Requirements for all programmes:
Candidates must have five O’level credits in English Language, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and Biology
(i)  Postgraduate Diploma in Chemistry (PGDC)
Candidates with at least a third class Degree with a CGPA of not less than 1.50 on a 5-point scale can apply. Candidates with HND certificates are not eligible for the PGDC programmes.
(ii)   M.Sc, Ph.D in Pure & Industrial Chemistry in the following areas:
          (a)    Analytical Chemistry
          (b)    Inorganic Chemistry
          (c)    Physical Chemistry
          (d)   Organic Chemistry
          (e)    Environmental Chemistry
          (f)    Pharmaceutical/Medicinal Chemistry
          (g)    Petroleum Chemistry and Petrochemicals

(i)    Polymer Science/Technology
Requirements for M.Sc in Pure & Industrial Chemistry:
Candidates must have a B.Sc in Pure and Industrial Chemistry with at least a CGPA of 3.00 on a 5-point scale or a PGDC with at least a CGPA of 3.50 on a 5-point scale.
Requirements for Ph.D in Pure & Industrial Chemistry:
Candidates must have an M.Sc Degree in Pure and Industrial Chemistry with a CGPA of at least 4.00 on a 5-point scale in addition to the other Faculty requirements
 24.  DEPARTMENT OF PLANT SCIENCE AND BIOTECHNOLOGY
(i)    Postgraduate Diploma Programme in the following options:
       (a)   Biosystematics/Plant Taxonomy
       (b)   Genetics and Breeding
       (c)   Environmental Plant Science
       (d)   Herbarium Management
       (e)   Biotechnology
       (f)   Ethnobotany and Phytomedicine
       (g)   Horticulture
 Requirements for PGD Plant Science and Biotechnology:
Candidates must possess at least a Second Class Lower Degree (22) or a strong Third Class (3rd) Bachelors’ Degree in Botany/Plant Science, or any good Honours Degree in Microbiology, Agriculture, Crop Science, Biochemistry, Genetics, Biotechnology or related field (depending on the option of the PGD) from the University of Port Harcourt or any other recognized University within or outside Nigeria. Potential Candidates with HND in relevant fields deemed suitable by the Department of Plant Science and Biotechnology’s Graduate Board of Studies would be considered for the requisite programmes.
(ii)   M.Sc, Ph.D in the following areas:
(a)   Plant Physiology
(b)   Mycology and Plant Pathology
