UI Emerges Number One Best University in Nigeria

According to Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings 2026, the University of Ibadan (UI) has emerged as Nigeria’s highest-ranked institution, placed in the 801–1000 global band. This marks UI’s return to the top spot after rising from fourth place in Nigeria in the 2025 rankings, overtaking Covenant University, which led in 2024 and 2025.

The University of Lagos (UNILAG) was the only other Nigerian university to feature in the global top 1000, also ranked 801–1000. Bayero University Kano, Covenant University, and Landmark University were ranked in the 1001–1200 band.

The 2026 rankings evaluated 2,191 universities across 115 countries using 18 indicators covering teaching, research, industry engagement, and international outlook. Among Nigerian institutions, UNILAG led in research quality, Bayero University Kano topped international outlook, and Covenant University ranked highest in industry engagement. Several other Nigerian universities appeared in lower global bands, highlighting ongoing challenges in global competitiveness.
